Overall Orientation

You are strongly oriented towards change. In a new environment, you want to quickly figure things out and get things done. You are not afraid to try new things, and your primary proactive orientation means that tend to be goal oriented. You are willing, however, to adapt your goals to the local situation and listen to the advice of others. You are flexible and willing to take chances. On the other hand, you may take too many changes because of a lack of patience. You may not spend enough time clarifying goals and preparing for your assignment.

Your opposing protective orientation may mean that after having arrived, you may create stress for yourself by trying to get things done too quickly and trying too hard to please others. You may be too willing to take risks. Once you are used to your new assignment you may have conflict because the goals you had when you arrived do not fit with the local situation. You may caught between wanting to get things done, and hesitation to do things that might be unpopular locally. Because you value both proactive strategies of getting things done, and adaptive strategies of fitting in with others, you may be unsure when to take action and when to follow advice.

Key challenges: Focus on planning before departure. Once arrived, be patient. Focus on defining clearly your achievement goals.

Personal relationships

Your greatest strength will be getting along with the people you meet in your new environment. Your willingness to engage with people you don’t know well will make it easier for you to form new relationships. You may not be careful enough, however, in who you get close to, and whose advice you take. You also may end up burning out because you try to hard to please and get things done. You may overlook key people because they seem unfriendly or distrustful. You should try to find out what is important to those people and be honest about your own goals and values. You may face conflict with fellow staff members – both at the head office or local office - because you feel they are inflexible or don’t appreciate local conditions.

Key challenges: Know yourself and don’t try to please everyone. Be patient when developing relationships with people who are less flexible than you. Pay special attention to finding people who are trustworthy, and whom you can trust when you are unsure of what course to take.

Problem solving

Problem solving
You value taking action and prefer getting things done rather than analyzing and planning. You may hurry too much without finding out enough about your new environment. You may be impatient with those who are more cautious.

Key challenges: Learn as much about the local situation as possible before taking action. Focus on planning and consensus building when starting something new.

Personal growth

You may try too hard to please others, and may hide your personal opinions in order to get along or get things done. This may create stress if you are caught between what you want, and what others want. The key to having a good experience will be to consider carefully what your personal priorities are, and commit yourself to protecting them.

Key challenges: Identify your personal priorities and don’t let others make you lose sight of what’s important to you. Stick up for yourself.
